Resting Roots is a public artwork for Nightfest 2026 in Singapore’s Bras Basah.Bugis precinct: three 3D-printed root pods to sit on, lit by an audio-reactive LED system built in TouchDesigner.
Challenge
A place to slow down in the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct, where its history of craft and the technology now shaping it meet in something people can sit on.
Process
We designed three 3D-printed root pods as seating and built their lighting as an audio-reactive system in TouchDesigner. Sustained audio set the ambient light level, while beats and sudden changes sent pulses through the LED structure that left fading trails behind them; MIDI control adjusted speed, colour, filtering and trail movement live, and TouchDesigner sent per-LED RGB values to an Arduino-driven addressable strip. Illuminated books carried the work into the space around the pods and connected it to the precinct’s craft traditions and shared histories.
Delivery
The final installation combined 3D-printed seating, audio-reactive LED lighting, live sound and illuminated books: benches that lit up with whatever was happening around them.
